State Birds

In the United States, it's traditional that each state has a state bird. The state bird is typically found commonly throughout in the state, but sometimes it represents a bird that is no longer found in the state.

The tradition of selecting state birds dates back to 1927 when the legislatures of seven states each chose a state bird, although the final state bird wasn't chosen by a state legislature until 1970.

The state birds below were selected and voted on by each individual state's legislature. The mockingbird is the most common state bird, and it represents six states.
